Happy Inauguration!
In the past several years when people have approached me about my nationality I would always answer that I am Swedish, although I have dual citizenship. Part of this answer stemmed from an embarrassment of being American given the foreign policies of the Bush administration. I was not proud of what America was doing abroad or of the divisive politics of our two party system of government. Their values clearly didn't reflect my beliefs nor represented what I wanted to be. Today I see major change in the country. It is apparent on all the faces of the people gathered in Washington, D.C. I feel that there is hope for this country and that people desperately want change and are willing to make sacrifices to make it happen. Not only is today a celebration for Barack Obama, but also the departure of George Bush and eight years of flawed ideas, abuse of power, and the inhumane treatment of people. I hope today is the dawn of a new era in American policy and politics.
It was evident during the campaign that America was desperate for a change. Obama's campaign events drew tens of thousands more people than John McCain's events. On the night of Obama's election people of many nationalities, religions, and races joined in the streets of Minneapolis in celebration. Hundreds of people crowded the streets and police officers stood by and watched in awe. Since the election people have rallied around Obama even more and now 3 out of 4 Americans welcome him into the White House. Perhaps it's the continuing collapse of the national economy that is forcing people to see that change is needed in our politics, economic models, and our way of life. We must transform from consumers to helpers and be willing to help our neighbors, regardless of our differences. Some people call this socialism, I believe it is our civic duty and a necessity if we want to continue to strive to be a great nation.
Please join me in celebration today and let's not wait for Obama to change America, but let us unite to make a change for the better.
