World Premier: Paper Heart Video
There are not many times in life when everything comes together, but the video for Paper Heart was one of those instances.
We had the opportunity to shoot a video in our native hometown of Solleftea, Sweden and Old Town (gamla stan) in Stockholm. This was a rare instance to literally show where we grew up and the environment that inspired the music and sound that we know as Love in October today. What makes it extra special is that we had the chance to work with our best childhood friend Daniel Galfvensjo, who hiked up mountains and withstood the bitter cold to help us shoot parts of the video.
The video was shot in the style of the old school, on a super 8 camera from the 70s. This presented several problems when shooting outside in December in Sweden. During winter, the lack of sunlight in northern Sweden allowed for 2 hours of filming per day. We had to film everyday for two weeks to finish. Another major problem was the cold. At times we filmed in -33 Celsius (-27 Fahrenheit) temperatures. The old camera (a Canon 814) would freeze up after about 30 minutes and we’d have to go inside and warm it up to get it working again. The freezing camera motor varied the tapespeed and playback rate, which created some unique and magical analog effects (to our delight). There was also no playback capability, and not much film available, so most shots are one take and we had to just hope we got it right.
Our good friend Rob Castilla (www.fivepennfilms.com) edited the video. Since the camera was constantly freezing he had to by trial and error manually change the playback rate of each scene to get it to sync with the audio.
This is the most special music video we’ve made. It highlights our home and who we are, and allows us to share our little piece of the world with you. Enjoy.
